I’d like to pretend someone will remember my post of almost two years ago about fern tarts, but I’m not holding my breath.
Back then I had my first encounter with a fern tart, and as it was a rather unglamourous supermarket version I was hoping to find one in a bakery some time.
Fast-forward to my Maybole sweet treat hunt, and on scanning the shelves in Bakery Bites (11 – 13 High Street, Maybole), I spied an old chum.
When writing posts within the “food analysis” category, I often talk generally about a specific item rather than focusing upon a single outlet and multiple foodstuffs.
However in the case of Ming Xiang Tai (133 Jalan Burma, Penang), I decided to make an exception as (a) the 4 things I tried were all delicious and (b) individual posts would have quickly become repetitive as I went off into rhapsodies each time about the amazing flaky pastry.
When the heat becomes unbearable in Malaysia, one option is to retreat to an air-conditioned shopping centre.
The Mid Valley Megamall in KL is an immense edifice crammed with shops and food outlets. Connected to it is The Gardens Mall which contains yet more places to spend money, and some good options for food including the Homi Chicken Curry Puff stand.
I have a few contenders, but one of the strongest has to be custard.
Hot custard poured on the side of puddings, cold leftover custard set into a lump in the bowl, pastry-cream-filled eclairs, nutmeg-dusted custard tarts; I love them all. So when I read about Denheath Custard Squares, I made of note of the stockists so I couldn’t miss out.
After clearing up the mystery of pineapple tarts for me, my boyfriend’s niece brought up macaroni pies. “Macaroni pies?” I queried hesitantly, trying to equate pasta and pies. There was no mistake though, it is essentially macaroni cheese in a pie.
