A few months ago, T made the most amazing chocolate cheesecake brownies from a recipe booklet published by Macmillan Cancer Support. As I devoured a still-warm slice, I thought to myself “add some peanut butter to that cheesecake swirl and this would probably be the world’s best cake”.
You see I, along with much of America, am in love with chocolate and peanut butter. The nutty saltiness and the sweet creaminess are a perfect combination in my eyes.
However in the UK, it’s easy to think one is alone in feeling like this. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and a few other Reese’s items are available here and there, but there’s very little else.
But all is not doom and gloom. I have noticed a slow and subtle increase in the availability of sweet treats combining these two delicious ingredients, and thought I would shine a spotlight on them in the hopes that more people would buy them, leading to massive market growth.
Last year, H was able to obtain some early taste samples from Montezuma’s of their Peanut Butter Truffles. I recently bought another packet to “remind myself what they tasted like”, and relished the smooth rich filling with a good peanut butter taste and the delicious milk chocolate.
One treat does not a revolution make, though. A month ago or so I was meandering around a giant Tesco supermarket and came across ChokaBlok Peanut Butter Nutter. A swirly mix of peanut butter and chocolate ice-cream, there are also peanuts covered in chocolate, chocolate drops and caramel sauce in the mix. I’d have been happy with just the plain ice-creams, but overloading desserts seems to be popular these days, and it seems churlish to complain.
ASDA has also got in on the act. I was gazing dreamily at ice-cream when I spotted a box of 4 Peanut Butter Crunch Cones. Priced at a bargain £1, the ice-cream is delicately peanut-flavoured, swirled with salt caramel sauce and topped with chocolate coating and peanuts. Well worth it in my eyes, and they also do a larger tub of ASDA Peanut Butter Crunch Loaded ice-cream, which I have yet to try.
Some of the big chocolate producers have also been dabbling their toes in the water. Kit Kat Chunky Peanut Butter apparently won a recent “which of these flavours should we make permanent” campaign, but I haven’t seen any on sale, so am not sure when they’ll be readily available. I quite like the little Kit Kats but am not so keen on the chunky ones, however maybe these will change my mind.
I am going to be keeping a sharp eye out from now on. I feel it rests upon my shoulders to ensure a bright future for chocolate and peanut butter desserts by eating as many as I can, as often as I can. Feel free to help me out, but I think I’ve got things well in hand.
UPDATE 27/5: Recent trips to other major chains have uncovered Marks and Spencer Peanut Butter Heaven ice-cream, and Waitrose Seriously Creamy 3 Peanut Butter Ice-creams. I’ve not tried either, but have high hopes!
