There is a traditional Nepalese fried bread called sel roti that I have been keen to try since reading about it. After scouring some of the local Nepalese restaurant menus, I found that Om Restaurant had it listed as a starter for a mere £1 a piece.
One grey lunchtime, H and I headed down, and ordered two sel roti, along with veg chatpate and some special tandoori veg momo. The menu contained a lot of familiar favourites, along with a range of sets, that I will have to try some day.
The roti came very quickly and was warm rather than super-hot, which made me think they might have fried a load in advance. It was slightly sweet and chewy, with a little grittiness, and reminded me somewhat of a mochi doughnut, which is not surprising as they are both made from rice flour. The spicy sauce turned it into more of a savoury affair, and it was very enjoyable.
No photo of the chatpate alas, but it was as crunchily delicious as one would expect. When asked how hot we would like it, H had said “Hot!” and I had said, “Erm, medium to hot, please,” as I was concerned it may be too much for me otherwise. Fortunately, although there were a good amount of chillis within, it was bearable!
If I see a different type of momo on the menu, it is my bounden duty to try it, so of course we had to have the tandoori momo. These took quite a while to arrive, as apparently they first have to be steamed and then go through a second cooking, but it was worth the wait. We both loved them.
They were crisp but not greasy, and had a lovely roasted flavour. A meaty version would probably be even more amazing, but the veg option was pretty good.
Along with a couple of teas, it was less than £30 for the two of us. Another great Nepalese restaurant option that I’m sure we will return to.
