Hong Kong Food Exploration: Dim Sum

How can I cover dim sum in a single post, you may be wondering? There are so many different dishes that make up this type of cuisine, so many flavours, textures and cooking methods.

Your concern is admirable and well-founded (I would have expected nothing less).

Before arriving in Hong Kong I imagined dim sum lunches every day. I pictured H and I visiting out-of-the-way cafés where old ladies trundled round trolleys and we selected a delicious array of dim sum while feeling secretly smug at how we were “keeping it real”.

Hong Kong Food Exploration: Roasted Meats

There are some to whom the window below would be a terrifying sight.

I can’t deny I prefer my food to remind me a little less of its origins, given that I suffer from survivor’s guilt and feel that my potential vegetarianism is largely postponed due to cultural acceptability twinned with selfish greed.

That said, I’m afraid that despite my occasional wrestling with my conscience, what I ultimately take away from seeing such a window is the anticipation of something delicious to eat.

Malaysia Food Exploration: Penang Recommendations

I deliberated for a while over whether to write any posts for Penang or Kuala Lumpur that summarised the places we particularly enjoyed eating. There are so many excellent bloggers in these cities writing about the food scene that the ground is well-trodden, and they all know far more about the cuisine than I do.

In the end, I decided against it for Kuala Lumpur as we were there so briefly and anywhere that we liked got a name-check in the various food-specific posts. For Penang, the same is broadly true, but there were a few extra places that I wanted to mention so I thought I may as well (even though it meant making another map which is my least favourite blogging task!).

Malaysia Food Exploration: Banana Leaf Meal

After a few days in Kuala Lumpur we took a coach to Penang.

We’d booked a hotel on the edge of the part of George Town which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A short walk away was the New World Park (Jalan Burma), home to a food court and a number of restaurants including Passions of Kerala, which specialises in banana leaf cuisine.

Malaysia Food Exploration: Roselle

On a previous visit to Malaysia in 2008 I asked a local blogger (boo_licious of masak-masak – I can highly recommend her site) for some restaurant suggestions for a celebratory family meal, and one place that came up was Precious Old China in the Central Market.

We went there and had a very enjoyable time, so much so that we returned there on our recent trip just to have a drink.
